The Sub Variations
There occurs in 21 jewel Vanguards, Crescent Streets and the 845 a variation that does not occur in other grades and jewel configurations. Because of the use of the Jeweled Barrel, the use of cap jewels on the pallet arbor and the escape wheel arbor varies. When the jeweled barrel is used either the pallet arbor or the escape arbor are capped. Previous to the Jeweled Barrel, both arbors are capped. The Jeweled Barrel begins to appear around serial number 12 million. The current research would suggest that the escape arbor is most usually capped when the Jeweled Barrel is used but this is not certain at the moment. This brings about at least 2 sub variations of Movement Variation 4. Explanation of Movement Variations
The marking of movements as being adjusted to 5 Positions occurs later in Model 92 production. It is difficult to nail down a definite point at which this occurs and there is also some feeling that movements that were returned to the factory for repair were sometimes marked "5 Positions" if they were not originally so marked. This means there could be movements marked "5 Positions" scattered through serial number runs previous to a point where it became common practice to do so. It most usually appears with the number 5 over the word Positions. Two notable exceptions are Vanguard Wind Indicators where the number 5 and the word Positions are in a straight line and the Canadian Railway Time Service movements where it is found around the balance wheel.
